Writing my dissertation

This semester,I was lucky enough to get a fellowship to write my doctoral dissertation. I only have to keep office hours one morning a week to be available for tutoring.
I dont have to teach either.

I am making progress but sometimes its hard to stay motivated.

I have a new found respect for writers now!

No matter what you think of both Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin, as women, as feminists, should we not be excited about this?

Why are people, not to mention females like the idiotic Sally Quinn, asking if Gov. Palin can do her job as vice president with 5 kids? I dont think one person has asked Sen McCain about his seven kids or umpteen grandkids...

And I seriously doubt anyone asked President John Kennedy about his two small children!

Another thing I take issue with is that people question Gov. Palin's beauty pageant involvement. I guess you cant be both smart and attractive as well.

I am outraged by not only the sexism I am seeing, but the fact that "feminists" or people who say they are feminists are showing that they are against women succeeding in politics if they are conservative. I didnt know that feminism was about conservatives and liberals.

My husband and I are on the way to Vegas soon...
I have never been there... My husband keeps telling me I am going to love it!
I am looking forward to seeing all the great shopping, but am a little depressed about it at the same time...

I mean, who wouldnt be depressed going into Hermes when the price tag says $3,000 for one handbag! Or going into Jimmy Choo, etc... You know what I mean! Most of us middle class girls cant spend that kind of money! I mean, yeah, I might get lucky playing the slots, but lets be real here, Hermes is unattainable for most of us...

Anyone know of any cool shops in Vegas that are affordable and unique?

One thing I am certainly looking forward to, since I am a self-proclaimed foodie, is the dining! Food heaven here I come!

Million Dollar Password observations...

I have sent int my "application" for Million Dollar Password. I was thrilled beyond belief when I heard the show was returning. My favorite game show of all-time was Super Password, hosted by Bert Convey.
If you out there in blogosphere have any clout with the show's contestant pickers, PLEASE PLEASE tell them I would be a great contestant!

Tonight, I noticed the words were much more difficult than in previous shows.
Words like "deputy" "sword" and others are hard to give...

I also noticed they had three ladies on today, which means my odds are getting better of being on the show. I think I have decided to send in my "application" once a week so the show knows my desire and enthusiasm for wanting to be on the show.

Boston Legal life lessons

I never really cared to watch Boston Legal, but my husband loves it, so I have tuned in... While the show makes me laugh, has convoluted story lines, is highly left-leaning, there is one thing I really like about it... Its the friendship between Alan and Denny Crane.

The writers portray Denny as a crazy far-right loon, but he and Alan remain close friends (Alan is extremely liberal)

What I like is that this shows that people with severely polar opposite political beliefs can be friends; best friends, no doubt...

In this highly divisive political climate, it is nice to see the writers show the love the two men have for one another. No, these guys are not gay, but they show affection like two real friends would...

College shootings

Last week's second university shooting makes me question what I would do in that situation... I teach at the university level, and have wondered what I could do to stop such a horrific event...I had this conversation with my husband, and all I could come up with was either carrying mace to class with me, or heaven forbid, carrying a concealed weapon...
Since I am terrified of guns, option 2 wouldnt work for me, so maybe carrying some mace or pepper spray would work...

The bottom line is unless someone has a weapon, no one can stop a psycho determined to inflict pain and injury...

That is why the laws in Texas changed to allow someone to carry a concealed weapon, with proper certification...In the 1980's, this guy shot up a Lubys in Killeen... A woman was there eating with her parents... Her parents were shot and killed by this madman... The daughter argued that if she had been permitted to carry her gun, she could have stopped this guy...

Grammy Awards - 50 years

Wow, is all I can say about tonight's show. It needs to be the 50th anniversary every year to have this quality of show. If you missed it, I am truly sorry...
Alicia Keyes performed twice! Morris Day and the Time sang with Rianna, who is so pretty!

They had this performance with Cirque de Soleil featuring The Beatles music
Then they had a gospel choir singing Let it Be, my second favorite Beatles song (Hey Jude is my favorite, and one of the best rock songs ever written in my opinion) Definitely made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

They had a gospel segment featuring several artists and Aretha Franklin sang with them!
I wish I had the time to research gospel artists and songs, because I really want to listen to more Christian music, but today's Christian music doesnt move me like gospel does...

Amy Winehouse performed, and sorry, I just dont get it about what people see in her...Not to mention I know she has drug issues, and I have had it with all these celebrities doing drugs and going to rehab... I find it ironic that her hit song is called "rehab" which I know she has just been in....

Kanye West performed, but he didnt sing "Good Life, " which I absolutely love! He sang his song to his mother, and the "make me stronger" song...

But the hands down best performance of the night was Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban (YES, THEY SANG TOGETHER - IT WAS LIKE HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!) One day I am going to see those guys in concert!

Tina Turner and Beyonce performed together... they sang "big wheels keep on turning - rolling, rolling, rolling like a river!" One of these days I am going to dress up like Tina and sing that song...
I wish I could sing and be a rock star performer... I just want to experience what those guys and gals experience being up on stage like that... I know it has to be a thrill!

Its so nice that the Pope is sticking to sound Christian doctrine... I disagree with his pronouncement against artificial insemination, but stem-cell research, as I remember recently, wont be needed anymore... A couple of months ago it was reported that stem cells could be taken from skin! Thats terrific! We wont have to worry about fighting it out with people who want to kill embryos. Human cloning is morally wrong also. The thought that another human being could be made to harvest his organs or use body parts sounds like Nazi Germany!

Obama supports drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. So that sounds like an enlightened position... But lets take it a few steps further...
If they get a drivers license, that presupposes that they will purchase cars, but will insurance companies sell them car insurance? Will illegals even know to get insurance on the car? What if they dont get insurance and someone is an accident with them? Who will pay for the damage? Not the taxpayers again?

I'm not surprised that Obama won, but what surprises me is Bill Clinton's response... He compared Obama to Jesse Jackson, because Jackson won in South Carolina in 1984 and 1988.

I am still pretty shocked at the death of Heath Ledger...
I feel bad that a two-year old child is left fatherless probably due to some type of drug overdose. I am hoping that I am wrong on that, but the likelihood he died of natural causes is low.

I am often troubled by how many Hollywood types get involved with drugs and alcohol.
These are the people who dont have to worry about money, about when their next meal will be, if they can afford to take their child to the doctor without child care etc. And they still choose
to slowly kill themselves by doing drugs.
Most of the time I dont feel sorry for people who do drugs.
There are other ways to cope with your problems.

Holly at www.decor8.blogspot.com says if she was a bedroom, she would be this room. I have to say that I would LOVE to live in this room. I love the flokati rug, but with a four year old running around, that wouldnt be practical at this stage in my life. And you know me and the artwork! Anything that highlights my artwork is deco-love for me! I wonder what that yellow thing is on the top left part of her art ensemble?

One of the things I struggle with regarding my art placement is whether to put my stuff in different color frames, or keep it all in one color. This room did a mix and it turned out great. I have tried it and for me, it just doesnt quite come out as crisp as this room does...

I also like that long, framed panel on the far right... I have some vintage wallpaper that I plan to frame in much of the same way, as soon as I can get to it!

I also like the pink pillows on the bed, and the huge pop of pink and black on the larger pillow.

Turns out that the North Carolina basketball team makes their bus driver meet them at away locations, even when the team flies there! The coach doesnt want to use another bus company to drive them around at the opponent's city.

The cost to the athletic program is cited, $31, 525. This is a good hunk of change... To me, this is wasted money, not to mention a possible Title IX violation... Does the girls basketball team have this same benefit?
Not to mention its only a matter of hours before the environmental crowd calls NC and harasses them for this needless poison into the environment!

One fundamentalist makes the case:
If we deny inerrancy, we make God a liar. If there are errors in the original manuscripts, manuscripts that testify they were breathed out by God, one of two things must be true: either God purposely lied or he mistakenly lied. Either way this would indicate that God is capable of making or of producing errors. Needless to say, this would destroy our ability to trust any of God’s revelation and cause us to doubt God Himself.

To my mind, this is Biblical fetishism. And absurd on its face, since there are far too many direct factual internal contradictions in the Bible to uphold this standard. I agree with Michael Spencer:

I do not doubt God or his ability to express revelation exactly as he wants it to be. The thought that God cannot reveal truth unless it is in a book that is supernaturally prevented from having normal, imperfect, human expressions of its time really never occurs to me. I assume that within the expressions, thought world, worldviews and literary genres of the time, God got exactly what he wanted and I can preach it without having to be concerned about "errancy."

I struggle with the notion that everything in the Bible is final, not to be interpreted, God's thoughts, etc largely because men wrote it...
I constantly listen to preachers who say, "in one translation, the Bible says this..."
Well, there shouldnt be various translations...Not to mention the language differences...
Are we to look at the parables as the literal word of God?

On the other hand, if we start picking and choosing from the Bible what we want to follow or what we disagree with, then we arent really understanding the totality of Christianity. I dont think God gave us a book to read in which we get to pick the easy stuff to do, and disregard the not-so-easy things...
For example, if I disagree with all the tithing chapters in the Bible (and for all of you non-tithers and Catholics out there, there are MANY chapters), how do I explain why they are in the Bible in the first place? If God didnt want me giving 10% of my income to him and the Church, why is it in there in the first place?
So if we start practicing a "cafeteria Biblical understanding," who is to say Jesus was born of a virgin, that he came back from the dead?

Dont we in essence, became gods by rewriting the Bible the way we want?

OK, I dont blame Romo and his partying in Mexico for this debacle tonight...
I am so upset that they blew the game I could scream!

1. Poor tackling by our defense led to the Giants first touchdown by Toomer.
2. This is the one I will allude to that really caused us the loss: our defense letting a nontalent Eli Manning-led offense score the last 47 seconds before the first half. Now that was ridiculous!
3. It is obvious that the blame is to go around for this loss, but our defense was a joke today...
4. All of the blasted penalties... How many false starts were there today?
5. Crayton dropping that pass in the third quarter really hurt.
6. The offensive line really stunk in the second half. I havent seen Romo on his butt that many times all season! When you start getting chased, tackled, and knocked down, it starts affecting your concentration, timing and completion percentages.
7. Our guys blew the game all by themselves...
8. Now lets hope Brett Favre and the Packers steamroll their butts next weekend!

2. The two "friends" who allowed their friend to be mauled by a tiger on Christmas at the San Francisco zoo
There is talk that these guys did something to tease the tiger which led her to jump out of her enclosure and kill their teenage friend. I also like the barstools/bar area, as well as the open shelving.

Open shelving means buying alot of cool, colorful tableware, which I definitely could do! Lastly, I tend to prefer galley kitchens, which of course this one is...

Gloria Steinem wrote the above, and boy, she couldnt be more wrong...Iowans didnt vote for Hillary because "they are regressing to childhood," they saw her BS for what it was... Memo to Ms. Steinem: people dont like Hillary or her politics...
And as far as voting for Obama for "masculinity-affirming" reasons, shouldnt they have voted for Biden instead? Obama and Edwards dont come across as "manly men." So youre wrong on that one too, Ms. Steinem.
Just come out and be honest; I guess we females should support Hillary because she has boobs, right? So much for judging a candidate on their platform and record...
Sorry, I am NEVER supporting Hillary just because she's a female, and I am not going to support Richardson just because he's half-Mexican.
I prefer to go with what one of my heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said: judging someone on the "content of their character."

I second this quote... Despite the information superhighway we all have access to, we still dont have enough hours in the day to "know it all." But I sure have met some "know-it-alls" who I relish taking down a few notches... Dont underestimate me folks... I can see through people's bullshit a mile away... I try to be versed in many different areas so people dont try and talk above my head... You know the type!

We have a fresh start again... So I have been getting my house organized and my school stuff organized...

I tend to be organized on every aspect of my life... In fact, my favorite show on TV is Style Network's Clean House. I have pondered dabbling in the professional organizer realm.
I just dont think I could do the interior design aspect the job would entail...

Liberals and anti-success mentality

You know, the one thing that I consistently point to on why I am NOT a liberal and will not be a Democrat any time soon is a forceful anti-success, anti-wealth mentality liberals have...

I get so tired of liberals wanting to punish the wealthy for acquiring the American dream all of us want...We tell our children to work hard, perservere, and maybe, one day, you can become wealthy... What our parents dont tell us is that we will be punished by liberals when we get there...
The rich in this country start businesses which give people jobs, they are the ones that take risks... They worked their butts off to live the American dream...
Then why do liberals feel the rich have to pay a larger percentage of their income to taxes? How in the world is that fair?
How do you liberals rationalize this? Every American should pay the same percentage of income tax - no questions asked...
And that little buzzword Hillary likes to use: "redistribution of wealth" equals taking money away from the wealthy... which, last time I checked, is SOCIALISM!

So liberals do not like successful people, which really bugs the hell out of me...
This is one huge component of why I left the Democratic party years ago...

Iowa results

Yes, last night was a monumental night in our nation's history.
An African-American candidate won a race in Iowa, of all places!
They only have about a 2% population of blacks, so does this mean that we have finally looked passed the color of someone's skin?
I am so thrilled to think that there might be a "turning of the corner" so to speak on race issues in this country.
I know its only one race, but I am going to take-in this historical event...

I picked this quote after seeing tonight's Iowa caucus results in which Huckabee and Obama proved victorious.
I think the Democratic Party is looking for someone fresh, with some new ideas (even though I dont think Obama has any vision for America - it seems like alot of platitudes to me). It looks like the people of Iowa are tired of the Clintonistas and worried about Bill Clinton getting back in the White House.
I wonder if we will see less of Bill on the campaign trail after tonight's results (one can only hope)

As for Huckabee, I think his Fair Tax has really resonated with voters there, along with his very strong pro-life stance. Conservatives feel very strongly on that issue and the anti-gay marriage issue. And Huckabee is just a likable guy, someone who seems trustworthy...

I still believe Romney will get the Republican Party nomination and Clinton will get the Democratic nomination. Those are my predictions for this year's election.

What a sorry showing yesterday!
After a lackluster December, I would say we all have something to worry about come two weeks from now...
I know it was rainy and wet, but the Redskins didnt seem to have any problems moving the ball...
Not only was the offense AWOL, but I saw some things in the secondary that included Reeves and Watkins I didnt like...
I appreciated hearing Cris Collinsworth say Saturday night after the Patriots win that he believes Dallas and New England will meet in the SuperBowl, but after yesterday, I really am wondering...
Lets hope all of our injured players return in two weeks...

My 2008 resolutions

Because its good to start the new year with some goals, here are mine:

1. spend more time in prayer and reading my Bible
2. finish my dissertation and graduate
3. spend more quality time with my husband and daughter
4. work out 3 or 4 days a week
5. lift weights twice a week
6. get a teaching job
7. re-evaluate these goals as I need to

Now #3-#5 I do now, but I want to continue those...
My motto for life is simple:

CARPE DIEM!

which means "seize the day!"
I live my best every day and strive to be "in the moment."

Heaven is the San Marcos outlet mall!

What does every shopoholic do after Christmas? Yes, hit the after-Christmas sales, of course! The outlets in San Marcos were the perfect place...
I'm convinced that heaven will have the best places to shop!
What stores did they have in San Marcos?
*Michael Kors( I found the cutest bag there and a skirt)
*Salvatore Ferragamo and Jimmy Choo (didnt have the courage to walk in those)
*Neiman-Marcus (I tried on some Taryn Rose heels that were gray and soooo comfortable but slightly out of my price range; OK, WAY out of my price range)
*Crate and Barrel (found a blue-and-white pitcher there)
*Talbots (the prices are far cheaper than in the stores - got three skirts and a sweater)
*Calvin Klein, Nine West, Ann Taylor, Ann Klein, Max Azria, BCBG, Gap, Pottery Barn and so many more!

It is definitely worth the time and gas to hit that place - ladies, you will find some bargains! I did! :)
